Woods Finish Mower

Got an old finish mower with the John Deere 4200 I bought and it looks like hell. The PTO shaft is rusted and barely moves, the belt is shot, the body is rusted all to hell, and who knows what the blades look like.

Remove PTO Shaft

Here are a couple of shots of the attached PTO

‘pto attached’

Remove the bolt from where the PTO shaft attaches to the large pulley. Then, pry open the slit in the PTO shaft collar and work the shaft off of the pulley. There is a half-circle shaped key that fits in a slot in the pulley shaft that slides into a slot in the PTO shaft to keep it from spinning since it’s a smooth shaft.

The PTO shaft cover was simple to remove once I figured out the trick. See ‘neapco pto shaft cover’ for the cover removal instructions.

Here is the shaft removed, with the cover removed and the blot + “key” that keeps it from spinning on the shaft:

Remove Top Bracket

Next, remove the top bracket bolt that holds the top of the diagonal arms and the end of the top-link bracket. In the picture you can see the wrench on the bolt that joins it all together and then see the picture of it pivoted up.

Remove lift arm connection pins

Next, remove the cotter pin and castle nuts on the 2 lower lift arm connection pins. I used an impact wrench here because I could not get the bolts to turn with a wrench due to the shitload of rust on the bolts.
